What exactly is movement finishing?
Finishing is the decoration and refinement of every visible (and often invisible) surface of a mechanical caliber after the engineering is done. It includes beveling edges, stippling plates, striping bridges, polishing steel parts to a mirror, bluing screws, engraving and guilloché work. None of it is required for the movement to run. A caliber with zero decoration keeps time just as well. Finishing exists because a mechanical watch is bought as an object of craft, and the finishing is where craft is most legible — which is also why it is the first place brands cut costs when they want to hit a price point, and the first place a knowledgeable buyer should look.
What is anglage and why does it cost so much?
Anglage, or beveling, is the process of cutting and polishing a 45-degree chamfer along the edges of bridges, levers and cocks. Machine-beveled edges come off the mill rounded and matte; a hand-executed bevel is flat, razor-straight and polished to a mirror that catches light along the component's full outline. The difference is dimensional: a hand bevel follows the part's contour at a constant width, turning cleanly into interior angles, while a machine bevel wanders and rounds off in corners. Finishing a single bevel line means working through successive polishing pastes on gentian wood pegs — dozens of passes per component — and one slipped stroke can scrap a bridge worth hundreds of dollars in raw material alone. Interior angles are the tell: a hand-finished bevel meets them in a crisp point; a machine bevel spills past them in a soft arc.
Why do watchmakers perlage the mainplate?
Perlage — also called stippage — is the overlapping circular stipple applied to mainplates and bridges with a rotating boxwood peg and diamond paste. Historically it served a practical purpose: it flattened tooling marks so that jewel sinks sat true and oil did not migrate across an uneven surface. Today its role is largely aesthetic, but execution still separates tiers cleanly. Machine-perlage is applied in uniform rows with even spacing; hand perlage follows the contours of the plate, with each overlapping circle deliberately placed around jewel sinks, screw seats and channel edges, thicker where the eye travels and vanishing where it should. On a disassembled caliber, the plate should look like waterlit cobblestones, not a stamped grid.

What are côtes de Genève, and is the Geneva Seal worth anything?
Côtes de Genève are parallel satin stripes ground into bridges, typically 2 to 3 millimeters wide, with a subtle grained texture between them. Their quality shows in the evenness of spacing and in how the stripes terminate at bevels — on the best work the striping and the anglage are laid out together so the bevel splits the last stripe cleanly. The Poinçon de Genève (Geneva Seal) certifies both origin in the Canton of Geneva and finishing standards defined in law, and it remains one of the few finishing claims with regulatory teeth; most other "high finishing" labels are marketing conventions with no independent inspection behind them.
What is black polish, and which parts get it?
Black polish — poli noir — is mirror polishing taken to its limit, typically on steel parts: click springs, ratchets, hammers in repeaters, polished screw heads. Achieved on a zinc or tin wheel with progressively finer diamond paste, a truly black-polished surface reads as pure black at certain angles because it reflects light so directionally. It is among the most time-consuming finishes in watchmaking, unforgiving of fingerprints and scratches in the raw steel, and is therefore reserved for the highest grade of a manufacture's caliber. How can you spot quality finishing without being a watchmaker?

- Check the screw heads. Screws blued by heat should show an even, gradient blue across the head; a paint-like coating pools at the slot and chips at the rim.
- Read the engraving rails. Straight polished lines inside letter grooves — chamfered engraving — signal hand or carefully recut work.
- Turn the movement under light. Machine decoration flickers unevenly; hand striping moves in continuous bands.
- Count the hours, not the complications. A time-only movement from a high-finish house can carry more labor than a mass-finished chronograph.
Does finishing affect performance and value?
Mechanically, only modestly. Smoother surfaces hold lubricant films better and reduce friction at pivots, so finishing has a real but secondary benefit to service intervals. Its primary function is durability of value: finished movements are designed to be disassembled, serviced and re-admired across generations, which is why service departments treat finishing as restorable rather than disposable.
